In the finale of the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”, the immortal knight says to the villain, who is attempting to pick the Holy Grail from among an assortment of goblets, to “choose wisely” – when he picks the wrong goblet (the shiny gold one) and perishes, the immortal knight says “He chose . . . poorly”.
As adult leaders, we must “choose wisely” many times, and in many ways, during the preparation and conduct of an outdoor activity, including the following areas:
- providing appropriate supervision;
- participant selection and training;
- providing competent leadership;
- conducting an appropriate activity;
- providing appropriate equipment;
- having an emergency plan;
- having an itinerary plan;
- competent venue selection;
- having a transportation plan;
- choosing competent vendors; and
- providing reasonable medical care!
It’s all about choices. Don’t be tempted to reach for the shiny goblet!
And, don’t be the adult leader about whom it is said “He chose . . . poorly”!
